Forum of Lithuanian non-governmental sports organizations

On May 12, 2016, the forum of Lithuanian non-governmental sports organizations organized by the Lithuanian Council of Sports Presidents took place in Vilnius, at the Exhibition and Congress Center Litexpo. The event was attended by representatives of 71 sports organizations, a total of about 200 people. The aim of the forum was to discuss the development of Lithuanian sports, get acquainted with models of sports systems and good practices in neighboring countries, and agree on common goals.

The forum was opened by the former President Valdas Adamkus. Following a greeting from the Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, speeches were made by the Chair of the Seimas Commission for Youth and Sports Affairs, Vidas Mikalauskas, Deputy Minister of the Interior, Chair of the National Physical Education and Sports Council, Elvinas Jankevičius, President of the European Non-Governmental Sports Organisation (ENGSO) Carlos Paula Cardoso, and Deputy Chair of the Council of Non-Governmental Organizations Elena Urbonienė. Also, Almeda Kurienė, Advisor to the President on Education and Sports, participated in the forum.

According to the LNOC President and Chair of the Lithuanian Council of Sports Presidents, Daina Gudzinevičiūtė, changes are needed in the Lithuanian sports system. “It is necessary to increase the efficiency of the allocation and use of funds and to strive for ensuring the transparency of sports funding. This requires changes in the legal framework. Lithuanian non-governmental sports organizations need to be more involved in the formation of the legal framework and strategic decision-making. Based on the examples of Lithuania and foreign countries, the activities of non-governmental organizations ensure more efficient and targeted use of state budget funds. Representatives of the organizations gathered at the forum today agreed to strive for the leadership of non-governmental sports organizations”, said D. Gudzinevičiūtė.

During the forum, presentations on sports systems in the European Union Member States were given by ENGSO President C. P. Cardoso, President of the Latvian Olympic Committee President Aldonis Vrublevskis, Vice-President of the Estonian Olympic Committee Jüri Tamm, President of the Danish Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation Niels Nygaard, ENGSO Secretary General Helena Carlsson, lawyer at the Finnish Olympic Committee Petri Heikkinen, Advisor to the Swedish Sports Confederation Tina Sahlen, Vice President of the Union of Lithuanian Sports Federations Romas Vitkauskas, President of the Lithuanian Association “Sport for All“, Bronislovas Vasiliauskas, President of the Lithuanian Paralympic Committee Vytautas Kvietkauskas, Deputy President of the  Lithuanian Municipalities Sports Divisions Heads Association and Head of Physical Education and Sports Department of Šiauliai City Municipality Gintaras Jasiūnas.

The participants of the forum confirmed the common goals of non-governmental organizations by signing a resolution “On the Development of Non-Governmental Sports in Lithuania and Self-Regulation”.
