A team of Olympians made an appearance, while the residents of Alytus flocked to the event’s main area in the square by Jaunimas Park, where tracks for 72 sporting events were spread over a territory of 42 hectares.
In keeping with tradition, the festival began with the lighting of the Olympic day flame, which the country’s elite athletes carried through the city, and the children’s rally to the main event area. The Olympic day flame was carried into the square by a true Olympic family: rower Mindaugas Griškonis, marathon runner Diana Lobačevskė and their daughter.
Participants of the celebration were read a word of congratulations sent by the President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė, while the President of the National Olympic Committee of Lithuania, Daina Gudzinevičiūtė, President of the Lithuanian Parolympic Committee, Mindaugas Bilius, chancellor of the Ministry of Education and Science, Tomas Daukantas and Deputy Mayor of Alytus, Valė Gibienė, greeted all those assembled in person.
In Lithuania, Olympic day has been celebrated for 28 years, but this was the first time the residents of Alytus got to enjoy hosting the celebration themselves. Next year, Olympic day will take place in Panevėžys.
