Lithuanian Olympic Academy
After the restoration of Lithuanian National Olympic Committee, the
Olympic Academy had been established in order to preserve and propagate
Olympic ideas and the cultural heritage of Olympic Movement, to strive
for spiritual and physical perfection, to unite scientists for these
purposes, to cooperate with International Olympic Academy as well as
scientific, training and sports institutions and organizations of
foreign states.
Professors Stanislovas Stonkus and Juozas Šliažas were the initiators
of establishment of Lithuanian Olympic Academy (LOA). Ass. Prof.
Valerijus Jasiūnas was elected the first President of Lithuanian
Olympic Academy, Ass. Prof. Algirdas Raslanas - the Vice-President and
Prof. Dr Hab Povilas Karoblis - the Dean. On 9 July 1990, Lithuanian
Olympic Academy became the newest Olympic organization in the state.
The first cadency of LOA activity was specified by historians directed
by Dr Hab Henrikas Šadžius. The conferences "Problems of Physical
Education and Sports in Lithuania" (1991) and "The Historical
Experience - the the Present and Future of Independent Lithuania"
(1993) were arranged. The scientific reports presented in both
conferences were published and issued as separate publications.
On 13 May 1994, LOA report and election congress in Kaunas elected
P.Karoblis to a post of the President of LOA. On 1 December 2002,
P.Karoblis was elected for the new 4-year term of office. At present,
LOA is one of top-quality sports science institutions.
LOA sessions and conferences become already a very important support
for sports science, historical research and generalizations. LOA offers
a scientific assistance to sportsmen-Olympians, supports the Lithuanian
Museum of Sports in its studies of history of Olympism. In cooperation
with Lithuanian Sports Scientific Council, Lithuanian Physical
Education Academy and Vilnius Pedagogical University, it publishes a
journal "Sporto mokslas" /"Sports Science"/ within several years
already.
LOA actively co-operates with International Olympic Academy:
representatives of Lithuania annually participate in its sessions and
conferences. Lithuanians also participate in seminars of journalists
(Athens-Olympia) as well as sessions for educations of higher
institutes of physical education and for young participants. The
sculpture "A Basketball Player" was solemnly unveiled in Olympia
(Greece). Stanislovas Kuzma, the author of the sculpture presented this
gift of LNOC to International Olympic Academy on the occasion of
100-year anniversary of restoration of Olympic Games. In such a way,
the cooperation with Nikos Filaaretos, the President of International
Olympic Academy started.
